15 Feb 96: A bomb was placed in Shaftesbury Avenue today by the IRA, a warning was given and the situation was handled safely by bomb squad officers and police. Jobs will go when Sadler's Wells closes for a two year refurbishment in June - but the massive job loses at the Royal Opera House now look less likely despite the need for massive savings.

Awards: Josie Lawrence won the Shakespeare's Globe Award for Best Actress. David Troughton received the Sir John Gielgud Award for Best Actor. William Hutt won the Sam Wanamaker Award for Outstanding Contribution to Elizabethan and Jacobean Theatre. Helen McCrory received the Richard Burton Award for most promising newcomer (Lady Macbeth, Tricycle). Jonathan Kent and Ian McDiarmid wom the Sir Tyrone Guthrie Award for Best Production (Hamlet, the Almeida).


13 Feb 96: Chester Gateway will get a production of Girls Night Out in August, followed by a national tour. The new Edward Bond play, In the Company of Men will open at The Pit later this year (contemporary story, London businessmen). By Jeeves will open the New Stephen Joseph theatre (a reworking of Jeeves by Ayckbourn and Lloyd-Webber).


10 Feb 96: Stephen Poliakoff's new play Blinded by the Sun will open at the National later this year with Frances de la Tour. This is the third play in his series about science.


8 Feb 96: Up to 500 jobs (2 in 3) may go at the Royal Opera House when (if?!) it makes its move to temporary accommodation in 1997. BAFTA nominations will be announced on 23rd Feb. The 1996 Stratford-Upon-Avon season will include The White Devil, Troilus and Cressida and MacBeth.


7 Feb 96: The musical Fields of Ambrosia received some of the worst reviews in recent years and closes next Thursday. Blue Remembered Hills will be at the Lyttelton in May, followed by a new Stephen Poliakoff play. Breaking Legs by Tom Dulak will be in the Gielgud late June. New musical Maddie (Keeling, McKenna and Dexter) planned for the summer in Guildford - Bishop's secretary is possessed by ghost of 20's movie star. Two Gentlemen of Soho will (British) premier at Croydon Warehouse in April.


3 Feb 96: Gillian Plowman won the 1995 George Taylor Memorial Award with Close to Clapham.


1 Feb 96: The National Youth Theatre's Fortieth year auditions will be held between March and Aril around the UK. More information on 0171 281 3863 (if you're between 14 and 21!). A sponsorship deal with Mercury Communications has removed uncertainty about the Donmar's future. The Liverpool School of the Performing Arts opened this week - Paul McCartney and George Martin were there. Lea Salonga is taking over the role of Eponine in Les Miserables on Feb 12, also joining the cast are Chris Lanham, Harriet Thorpe and Grania Renihan.
